Alitia was left at home with two small childrenand two slaves, brought from Louisiana, who had been given to them at their marriage. Alitia rode horseback to Louisiana carrying her children in the "Run Away Scrape" when Santa Anna and his Mexican Army were reported to be travelingdown the Trinity River.
William's family and other settlers in East Texas hadtrouble with the Indians and he at times joined his neighbors in skirmishes with them Once when he was on such a mission, a band of Indian men appeared at theisolated BARKER residence. Alitia realizing she could not risk offending them,she invited them into her house and placed freshly baked bread and other foodbefore them. They ate and left without harming her and the children.
