after mother's death, went to live with Hiram Jones in Otisco NY until 21. Hired out as monthly help, invested in small tin trunk full of "Yankee notions" which he sold on the road on the way to visit Mahala in Evans NY. Here he married. Then was
salesman for Seth Thomas Clocks. settled in Evans and built farm, sawmill, and gristmill, and went into real estate. He rafted lumber to buffalo, then by canal to Albany, then by hudson to CT, where he sold it for clocks. then he manufactured hay
rakes. he and his wife both born again in the "great revival of 1832". 1856 moved to iowa and built saw mill on over 1000 acres which he rented. firm believer in Temperance, he said he would not serve alcohol at his mill raising in NY. was told no
one would come but they did, where he fed them well and gave them coffee. firm believer that his children would be educated, and always opened his home to those less fortunate.
