DEATH OF AN EARLY PIONEER.

Jane E. Workman was born in Illinois Dec. 7, 1836, and died at Glasgow, Iowa. Jan. 15, 1910. She moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.D. (B.D.?) Workman, to what is now the state of Iowa, when but six months old and located in Round Prairie township. Glasgow Baptist church, which was organized in her father's house. In 1856 she was married to J.D. Howell; to this union were born five children - J. T. Howell, Muscatine; John S. Howell, Fairfield; Mrs. Wm. Brewer, Belknap; B. W. Howell, at home with his mother, and Joseph C. Howell, Glendale.

The month was marked by many sad losses - On the 15th at Glasgow, Jane E. Howell died aged 74 years. Mrs. Howell came to this county in 1837 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Workman. She married Joseph D. Howell whose father, John Howell, was a member of the Virginia legislature and after coming to Iowa was a member of the Iowa legislature in the early days, traveling by horseback in both states and carrying his baggage in saddle-bags.
